Doug Galloway is the President of Vanorsdale Insurance Services, a 60-year-old Commercial Insurance Brokerage firm based in San Diego California.  Vanorsdale serves business clients throughout the United States and specializes in property, liability, auto, workers compensation and group health benefits for middle market clients.

After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara where Doug majored in Business Economics, he started his insurance career with Liberty Mutual Insurance as a business sales representative.  He was promoted to Resident Manager of the San Diego office within four years.  There his primary role was to write and service business clients and run an office that included claims, risk management, personal lines, and administrative services that supported local clients and the San Diego locations for national clients.

Nationwide Insurance then hired Doug to build and open a Nationwide agency of his own.  He was there until Nationwide pulled out of the California business insurance marketplace in 1993, when he then joined Vanorsdale Insurance.  Doug and his management team have built Vanorsdale into one of the largest locally owned and operated Property and Casualty insurance agencies in San Diego.

Activities outside of the insurance industry include service on several non profit boards including the YMCA and Luther Tower.  He received the Ehren Eckhart Award from the San Diego Chapter of the Independent Brokers and Agents of America for outstanding service to his community and the insurance industry.

John P. O’Neill

John has 36 years of experience in the commercial insurance market. John is a native of Chicago, Illinois and is a graduate of Southern Illinois University, where he majored in Management.

He began his insurance career in Illinois with Wausau Insurance Companies in 1973. While at Wausau, John became knowledgeable with all lines of business insurance. At that time, Wausau was the third largest writer of Workers’ Compensation in the country, and one of the leading writer’s of all lines of commercial insurance.

John came to California in 1976 and was an agent for EBI, a direct writer of Workers’ Compensation. At EBI he enhanced his knowledge of California Workers’ Compensation.

In 1979 John was named Sales Manager for Wausau Insurance and managed their San Diego branch. While at Wausau he was responsible for hiring and training new agents, and managing the day-to-day operations of the office.

John was able to expand his knowledge of large accounts while working for Johnson & Higgins, who at the time was the nation’s third largest insurance broker. While at Johnson & Higgins he handled Workers’ Compensation and Property Insurance for Scripps Clinic, Children’s Hospital, Rohr Industries, and Buck Knives.

In 1986 he became an independent agent at Nationwide Insurance and managed his own insurance agency, specializing in middle market accounts.

In 1996 John became principle and Vice President of Vanorsdale Insurance Services, where he currently serves as the Sales Manager and a producer. John handles a wide range of commercial insurance clients and is a Middle Market Specialist.  Middle Market includes accounts that have significant insurance exposures, do not have Risk Management departments, and rely on their agent to secure appropriate Insurance.

Steve Coviello
Executive Vice PresidentAlan Schaffer

Steve Coviello is a native of Boston, Massachusetts and is third generation Insurance Professional. Steve Brings 21 years of experience professionalism to Vanorsdale and became a partner in the firm in 1998. He is passionate about his friends and clients, and continues to educate himself in his quest to be the best professional he can.

Steve has served on the Board of Directors for the Insurance Brokers & Agents of San Diego and has chaired the Insurance Day conference in 2003 & 2004. He is a member of the Associated Builders and Contractors of California, The North County Business Council and the SDBH networking group.

Steve continues to develop new relationships and is committed to helping his current and future friends and clients navigate thru their commercial insurance issues. His specialties include Construction, Retail, Wholesale, Manufacturing and Habitational risks.

Outside of Vanorsdale, Steve enjoys golf, coaching and mentoring young athletes in golf, baseball and basketball. Steve is a fanatic about his Professional sports teams, the Boston Bruins, the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and the Boston Celtics.

Alan Schaffer

Alan Schaffer has 13 years experience in the commercial insurance market. Alan is a graduate of Northern Arizona University where he received a degree in criminal justice. He began his insurance career at CRES Insurance Services, the largest real estate managing general agency on the West Coast. In order to expand his knowledge base he moved to an independent brokerage firm in San Diego, which was more directed to the general business market.

Alan then became a part of the Vanorsdale team in 2004 and has now been with the company for 9 years. He quickly became the top sales producer and was named Vice President of Business Development in the fall of 2009. Alan’s client list consists of corporations involving the chemical industry, manufacturers, contractors, wholesalers, and technology and biotech companies. A strong referral base has created a diverse client list, but recently his team has been focusing more in chemical manufacturing and distribution arena. As current members of the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD), his team has been able to bring the values of Risk Management into this tougher class of business. His hard work and dedication to his clients has earned him high remarks from many of the leading insurance companies and client dedication has helped him retain numerous large accounts year after year. Alan became a principal at Vanorsdale in 2009 and he was also elected to the Board of Director’s.

Outside of work, Alan enjoys snowboarding, golfing, spending quality time with family and traveling to tropical islands.

James J. Martikas

James joined Vanorsdale Insurance Services in 1994 and has played a key role in the continued growth of our benefits department.  Through the years, he has brought an innovative approach to our clients, offering creative solutions in an ever-changing economic environment.

A native of San Diego, James has over 20 years of insurance experience since graduating from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance.  James specializes in implementing cost-savings solutions for businesses of all sizes.  He provides educational information & ideas to employers, offering the best programs for their employees based on company goals & budget.

James is a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU). 
He received PacifiCare’s Signature Club award as a top producer in 2004.
